Sacramento has a new landmark!
MAP (Midtown Alley Project) is excited to announce the completion of the
"Midtown Mosaic" mural located in the alley between K and L in the 23rd
Street block. Less than a year ago a grid with various size spaces for
artists to paint in was laid out on the 80'x10'wall. A call to artists went
out and talented painters submitted their concepts. MAP facilitators
Thomas Roth, Kristina McClanahan and Clare Bailey began the selection
process. Their goal was clear, the selected artists would encompass the
widest variety of styles imaginable while adhering to the simple guidelines
of no overtly political, religious or sexual content allowed.
The "Midtown Mosaic" mural showcases the work of over 60 talented artists.
The various styles represented include tattoo inspired images, landscapes,
portraiture, cityscapes, abstracts, whimsical pieces and one tile mosaic
space. The variety of artistic styles and the diversity in subject matter
gives this mural a broad range of appeal.
This Sacramento landmark mural was completed without funding from
government or city municipalities. It is truly a community mural. The
participating artists gave freely of their time and talent and local
people helped in any way they could. Business owner Cody Dorkin of Studio
24 opened his doors to provide restroom facilities and cool water to the
artists while they worked. Another area businessman, Paul Watts of GRS
(Graffiti Removal Services) generously discounted the anti-graffiti
product and donated his time to apply it to the wall. Hector Ortiz the
Energy Specialist for SMUD helped us get a light put on an existing pole
to illuminate the mural after dark. An admiring neighbor brought cold
treats (Otter Pops) for the artists one hot day. The list of good deeds
goes on and on. We at MAP are very grateful for everyone who made this
happen. Currently we are planning the next Midtown Alley Project. Keep
your eyes open for another stunning mural coming to a Midtown alley soon
